It is the sixth game in the Lego Star Wars video game series from TT Games and a follow-up to Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens from 2016. With extra characters from the rest of the Star Wars movies and television shows published as DLC, the game adapts all nine films in the Skywalker Saga series.

On April 5, 2022, Nintendo Switch, Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One users could download Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Critics gave it mostly positive reviews, praising its aesthetics, design level, focus on exploration, and humor; they had mixed feelings about its side combat and many were critical of its technological problems and absence of internet co-op. Within two weeks after its release, the game sold over 3.2 million copies.

Gameplay

Players can choose to start the game from any of the three Skywalker Saga trilogies and finish them in whatever order they desire, unlike most Lego video games where players must progress through the tale linearly. Instead of six levels as in prior games, each episode has five main plot missions, for a total of 45 levels.

Between the five main levels, there are also a few brief pre-levels that develop the plot but lack collectibles like mini-kits or True Jedi. Lightsaber users can employ a range of combos with heavy attacks, light assaults, and Force maneuvers, and these blaster characters now have another over-the-shoulder camera in comparison to prior games’ combat. 380 characters are playable in the game, who is not necessarily constrained.

Similar to its forerunner, Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the game’s central location is not one locale, like Mos Eisley Cantina of Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, but rather a large selection of completely explorable planets packed with numerous popular Star Wars sites.

Tatooine, Naboo, Coruscant, Geonosis, Kamino, Kashyyyk, Mustafa, Utapau, Dagobah, Yavin 4, Bespin, Jakku, Endor, D’Qar, Takodana, Asch-To, Cantonica, Starkiller Base, Kijimi, Crait, Pasaana, Ajan Klass, Exegol and Kef Bir are among the planets and moons that are featured in this game.

The center also contains many ships with free-to-explore areas, including Star Destroyers and the Death Star. In the hub environment of the game, chance meetings are possible. For instance, a group of TIE fighters could be launched after the player by an Imperial Star Destroyer that unexpectedly jumped out of hyperspace. Players can decide whether to battle them in dogfights or move the plot along by doing so.

In contrast to many prior Lego video games, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga doesn’t provide a character customization feature. The game has a feature called Mutter Mode that lets players choose between the normal voice acting of the game and the characters making sounds of grunt and mumble in a manner reminiscent of earlier Lego video games.

Development

Before the film’s release, Lucasfilm and Disney did not divulge important plot points about The Rise of Skywalker to the game development team. Till Lucasfilm provided further information, TT Games focused on other game-related tasks. The game is created on Traveller’s Tales’ brand-new NTT engine.

In a report released by Polygon on January 20, 2022, the level of crunch to taken place since the game’s launch in late 2017 was described, including the number of employees who had clashed with management over the game’s tight development dates, the company’s culture of crunch, and antiquated development tools.

Additionally, the usage of NTT was highly contentious within the organization because many workers had been lobbying for the usage of Unreal Engine instead. NTT proved to be quite challenging to utilize, and several animations required hours longer to create than they could have on the old engine.

As a result, Traveller’s Tales decided to use the Unreal Engine moving forward to the upcoming projects, making Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga the only game they ever created using NTT.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga includes authentic voice acting, similar to Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with certain performers repeating their roles from the movies and TV shows. Due to a conflict, this is also Tom Kane’s final acting role.

Release date

Lego At Star Wars Celebration Chicago, Lucasfilm sound editor Matthew Wood first hinted that Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was in production. During the press conference by Microsoft at E3 2019, an announcement teaser debuted. To coincide with the premiere of The Rise of Skywalker, a second trailer featuring a scene from each of the nine films was made available on December 20.

The 20 October 2020 release date was made known by a video that was uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube account on May 7, 2020. The original video was declared private the same day, and a new video with the release date removed was uploaded.

It was revealed that the game would launch in Q1/Q2 2021 with extra versions on the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. This information was presented during Gamescom: Opening Night Live in August 2020.

The game’s postponement was announced on April 2, 2021, but no new release date was given. The second trailer of gameplay and the statement that the game would be released in early 2022 were both made on August 25, 2021, at Gamescom. On January 20th, A trailer of gameplay was made available, formally announcing the 5 April 2022 release date.

Players had the option of pre-ordering the game’s deluxe or standard edition before it was officially released. Both the character packs as well as a Luke Skywalker mini figure with “blue milk” are included in the latter. A patch was released in May 2022, one month post the game’s launch, to fix significant bugs and add the Fulminatrix, Home One, Invisible Hand, and Venator as new capital ships that can be unlocked.

Seven DLC packs were released on March 7th, 2022, and they were made available in the days that followed the game’s debut. The Character Collection 1 is made up of these initial DLC and is a part of both Deluxe Edition and subsequently launched Galactic Edition. Any digital purchases, including pre-orders, come with an exclusive character that is a vintage Obi-Wan Kenobi.

4 character packs and the main game were both released on April 5. Five new playable characters are introduced in The Mandalorian Season 1: Greef Karga, Din Djarin, Cara Dune, Kuiil, and IG-11. Grogu is also added as Djarin’s non-playable companion. Younger incarnations of characters like Qi’ra, Tobias Beckett, and Enfys Nest can be seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story, in addition to Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, and Han Solo (as found in the movie).

The original mini-figure versions of Princess Leia, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Lando Calrissian, and Darth Vader are included in Classic Characters. Incinerator Trooper, Death Trooper, Range Trooper, Mimban Stormtrooper, and Imperial Shore Trooper are among the five specialized stormtrooper variations included in the Trooper Pack.

Only gamers who have pre-ordered the game were given access to the last two packs at launch, and who placed a pre-order for this game. They were later made available for individual purchase: On April 19, Classic Characters, and on May 4, Star Wars Day, Trooper Pack.

The character pack for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which included Bodhi Rook, Jyn Erso, K-2SO, Cassian Andor, Chirrut Îmwe, Orson Krennic, and Baze Malbus was made available on April 19.

The last two character packs were made available on May 4. Boba Fett, Ahsoka Tano, Fennec Shand, Bo-Katan Kryze, and Moff Gideon are all playable characters in The Mandalorian Season 2, and Wrecker, Hunter, Tech, Echo, and Crosshair are included in The Bad Batch.

A Galactic Edition of the game was revealed on September 9, 2022, at the 2022 D23 Expo Presentation. It was made available on November 1, 2022. This version includes the first seven DLC packs as well as the new Character Collection 2, which includes six new character packs. All of these character packs will also be sold individually, with some coming out at a later time.

The Clone Wars and Lego Star Wars: Summer Vacation TV Special packs went on sale on November 1. While the latter has holiday-themed versions of Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Emperor Palpatine, Finn, and R2-D2, the former features Captain Rex, Asajj Ventress, Darth Maul, Gar Saxon, and Savage Opress.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi and Rebels packs were made available on November 15. While the latter features new iterations of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader (based on their appearances in the show), as well as the Third Sister, the Grand Inquisitor, and the Fifth Brother, the former introduces Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and Hera Syndulla.

The final two packs will be made available on November 29. Playable characters in Andor include Luthen Rael, Cassian Andor, Dedra Meero, Syril Karn, and Bix Caleen, and while Cad Bane, The Armorer, Black Krrsantan, Peli Motto, and Cobb Vanth are included in The Book of Boba Fett.

New features of the game

With the help of a tonne of awesome new features, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga already has a strong case for becoming the best LEGO game ever. Star Wars has consistently seemed to be the best franchise to pair with LEGO for video games, and even after such a recent release, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is already asserting that it is the best LEGO game ever.

That was made possible by a tonne of awesome brand-new features that were absent from the prior LEGO Star Wars games.

Players are reaping the benefits as they become lost in this galaxy covered in bricks thanks to all the work that has gone into the game, from new modes to overhauls of the gameplay to general gameplay characteristics. Here are the coolest features of this game:

  • Shoot off helmets

One of the many amusing little things that enhance the immersion in the game is the new ability to shoot off enemy helmets. In this game, blaster combat in general had a total redesign, and it is fantastic. One of its more entertaining features is this. Simply hitting a stormtrooper in the head with a headshot will cause their famous helmet to fly off, temporarily knocking them unconscious.

  • Pew pew mode

Similar to the rest of the LEGO games, LEGO Star Wars: A Skywalker Saga provides players with several extra options and settings, including the well-liked “Mumble” and “Galaxy Rave” modes. ‘Pew Pew’ mode is a recent addition. This mode transports users back to their childhoods when they created sound effects for Star Wars games. Blaster firing becomes a verbal “pew pew,” and lightsaber maneuvers become the childhood sound of “fwsh.”

  • Trilogies & selection of characters

The title of the game makes clear the most notable new addition. The entire narrative is now available to players, as opposed to the past when fans could only access the first six episodes of The Force Awakens. With that comes a slew of previously unreleased LEGO Star Wars video game characters, including more than 800 distinct characters and over 300 playable ones (including DLC characters and characters only accessible through unlock codes). These characters range from the most recognizable heroes and antagonists of the saga to the less well-known ones that die-hard fans will enjoy.

  • Space

Space has undoubtedly appeared in prior LEGO Star Wars games, just not in the same way. The player can do a great deal more in space in terms of sheer volume, breadth, detail, and size. The player is not constrained by the constraints of missions (which were the player’s only opportunity to reach the stars in previous games), so they are free to fly around whenever they feel like it. The combat is also fantastic. Space now has random encounters, Kyber Brick Comets, and side missions, which is a new, improved feature that all fans like.

  • New camera

The camera is one of the largest modifications made to the LEGO video game format in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. The camera in this game is over the shoulder and frees to move, unlike the overview camera found in earlier LEGO Star Wars games.

While some players may favor the traditional LEGO camera approach, this allows the player to move the camera around freely, offering the game a new and possibly better, and more immersive experience. Unquestionably, this is one of the biggest and most positive adjustments it has ever made to previous games.

  • Open world

With its frequently breathing open world, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker has accomplished what no other LEGO game has, catapulting it to the top of the rankings of the best LEGO games. The game is jam-packed with content, and there is much for players to do in every area and every corner of the Galaxy. The open world in this game is truly deserving of praise for being as great and vast as it is, with unlockables, side missions, puzzles, random encounters, and random space fights.

  • Improved combat

The combat in this game has had a thorough redesign and been transformed into something damn great, which is one of the biggest differences between it and previous LEGO Star Wars games.

Not just one sort of fighting is brand-new and fantastic; all melee, lightsaber/Force combat, and blaster battles have been improved. Players are rewarded for swift, original combos with kickass animations, and if they are not inventive enough, the opponent will block them. In blaster battles, the player has full control over aiming and there is an option for the cover. Overall, LEGO Star Wars makes it more enjoyable than ever to engage in combat.

  • Upgrades & abilities

The 10 character classes in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, each with their special talents and upgradeable skills (except the “Extras” characters), are only one of the numerous ways the game immerses players in the experience.

The fundamental upgradeable skills are also excellent; their impacts are felt when playing and they are not merely for aesthetic sake. It’s particularly excellent for free play when the player can create teams of character, each giving something, with an extra like Max Rebo, to have these different classes be so distinct and have their special powers.

  • Different paths to choose from

The primary story missions in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is distinct from those in any of the games that came before them in that the player has a great deal of flexibility of choice from the moment the game is loaded. As long as they start with the first film in each trilogy, they can choose which of the three Star Wars trilogies to watch first and in any order.

That is hardly revolutionary. However, are the different routes that the levels provide in terms of LEGO video games. Players can approach the level in a variety of ways, including stealthily and by using other methods of transportation besides the traditional linear route.

  • Data cards & Kyber bricks

LEGO Star Wars no longer uses gold bricks. Instead, Kyber Bricks are used in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker. The Galaxy is strewn with a tonne of them, and when paired with studs, they may be used to purchase a broad variety of items from the menu.

Datacards, 19 in all, are included in the game along with Kyber Bricks and can be used to combine studs with them to unlock a variety of extras, such as stud multipliers, Porg companions, and Lightsaber Baguettes. These cards, which are dispersed around the galaxy, give the player an additional layer of entertainment and exploration.

  • Lots of playable characters

The largest cast of playable characters in the LEGO Star Wars series, including the greatest legends from each era of the Skywalker tale, can be found in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Players can take on the roles of their favorite heroes like Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rey, Finn, BB-8, and a host of others to battle the forces of evil, or they can join the dark side as characters like Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, and others.

You can also command the best vehicles in the entire galaxy. In the Millennium Falcon, they can jump to light speed to escape Imperial starships, engage First Order TIE fighters in Resistance X-wing combat, or participate in a pod race on Tatooine.

Final words

Friends and family may play through iconic Star Wars events that have been reinvented with LEGO fun and humor by jumping directly into their favorite saga film. The original trilogy can be started with Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, the sequel trilogy with Star Wars: The Force Awakens or the player can start at the beginning with Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Players will have the option to return to any planet at any time and in any order, they choose, whether it is the desert of Geonosis, the marshes of Dagobah, or the snowfields of Starkiller Base. It’s possible to explore and have fun throughout the entire cosmos.
