Stardew Valley Overview

Stardew Valley is a farm simulation role-playing game developed by Eric Barone under the alias Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone.

It is an open-ended game that allows players to take the role of a character, who takes over the land and house owned by his grandfather in the town of Pelican.

The game was originally released for Windows in 2016 and later introduced to other platforms. Besides Windows, this game can be played on macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, iOS, Android, and PlayStation Vita.

Stardew Valley allows players to perform various activities such as raising livestock, growing crops, cooking, mining, foraging, and fishing. You can also socialize with the inhabitants of the town, including marrying and having a family. The online mode can accommodate up to four players at the same time.

Barone developed this game all by himself over four years. Stardew Valleys is inspired by the Harvest Moon series and a few other games. In the later stages of development, Barone was approached by the British studio Chucklefish who helped him publish the game.

Stardew Valley was critically praised upon its release. The game was appreciated for its characters, relaxing qualities, and music. It is considered one of the best farm simulation games that are ever made. It was also praised by the creator of the Harvest Moon series Yasuhiro Wada.

Stardew Valley emerged as a commercial success and sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

Gameplay

Stardew Valley is a farming simulation game that is heavily inspired by the Harvest Moon game series.

The game starts with the player creating a character, who becomes the heir of a small house and plot of land owned by their grandfather in Pelican Town.

Players have the option to choose from different types of farms, each of which has a unique theme, advantages, and disadvantages.

The farmland is overrun with trees, boulders, weeds, and stumps. To create the farm of your dreams, you must clear the farmland; tend to livestock, and crops to generate revenue. Along with that you also need to expand the farm by building new facilities.

Players can interact with non-playable characters who are residents of Pelican Town. The more you interact with other characters, the better it is for you.

There are 12 marriage candidates. Players can get married to any of these candidates, depending on the relationship you share with them. After marriage, players have the option to have a child with their partner.

You can engage in various exciting activities such as crafting, cooking, and exploring the caves in search of treasure. You can also participate in various quests that will help you to earn additional money. You can restore the town’s community center or complete JojaMart bundles to earn rewards like tools and seeds.

By completing multiple bundles, you get access to new mechanics and areas in the game. However, all these activities must be metered against the health and exhaustion level of the character. Consuming certain food items provide grants to players that are useful in certain situations and activities.

Players can replenish their energy and health by consuming more food. This will help them to perform more tasks in a day. The game’s calendar has four months, each with 28 days. Every month represents a season and determines what crops can be grown during that time.

Players can restore an island and a greenhouse that can grow crops, regardless of the season. Reaching this stage indicates that you have come a long way in the game.

Development

Stardew Valley is the creation of American indie game designer Eric Barone. Originally, the game was titled, Stardew Sprout.

Barone wanted to create a modern alternative to Harvest Moon Series, which he believed had gotten worse over time. Since he couldn’t find a satisfactory replacement, he decided to create his own game, similar to the Harvest Moon Series. He also took inspiration from other games like Terraria, Minecraft, Animal Crossing, and Rune Factory.

Barone was the sole developer of the game. He created the game’s music pixel art, story, dialogue, and sound effects all by himself. He included features like quests, combat, and crafting that he liked in the other games.

Initially, he planned to release the game on Xbox Live Indie Games. Later, he realized that he has a much bigger scope than originally anticipated. He publicly announced the game in September 2012. After receiving a positive response from the gaming community, he began to work on it.

In 2013, he was contacted by the director of Chukclefish Finn Brice, who offered to help him release the game. They took over many of the non-development activities such as setting up the development wiki, site hosting, and others.

Barone was against using Steam’s early access, as he felt that the platform was not suited for Stardew Valley. It took him four years to complete the project. He originally programmed it in C#, but later migrated to MonoGame in 2021.

He aimed to provide players with an immersive feeling in a small farming community.

Release

In April 2015, Barone teased the release of the game. He refused to accept any pre-sale payments or put them onto the Early Access program/

Stardew Valley was first launched on February 26, 2016. The initial version was available only for the Windows platform. Following the release, Barone continued to work on additional features and bug fixes.

Barone decided to do a public beta testing of the multiplayer feature in 2017 for the Windows version. It was released in April 2018, followed by the official launch for all PC platforms on August 1, 2018. Later, in December 2018, the multiplayer update was introduced on the Nintendo Switch.

The iOS version of the game was launched on October 24, 2018, followed by the Android version on March 14, 2019. Both mobile versions include the ability for macOS, Linux, and Windows, to transfer progress to their device.

In December 2019, the game was added to the Tesla Arcade, a Linux-oriented game system incorporated within most Tesla car models.

Stardew Valley: The Board Game, a cooperative board game adaptation, was launched in February 2021.

All players start with 500 gold coins. The “Current Funds” and “Total Earnings” can be viewed on the Inventory window by pausing the menu.

Players can earn gold by collecting various items such as fishing, farming, foraging, or mining. Not only that, but you can also earn gold by engaging in fights.

Gold is earned in the night after the player is asleep. You can view the amounts for each item in the summary window.

Players can also collect gold by selling items to various merchants. It should be noted that merchants will buy only the items that correspond to the type of things they sell. For example, you can sell gem and metal ores to the Blacksmith, fish to Fish Shop, edibles to the General Store, and so on.

Players are rewarded with gold every time they complete a quest. There are different types of quests such as catching fish, slaying monsters or delivering items. Once you complete a quest, open the Journal to get your share of gold coins. Click on the “reward” option and the amount of gold you won will be added to your account.

Gold coins are also sent via email. The player’s parents will send money after the player acquires a specific amount of gold.

Farm Maps

Stardew Valley has seven different Farm Maps. You can choose from any of the maps at the beginning of the game. Each farm map is different from the others, in terms of layout. Not only that but different maps favor different skills and offer different benefits.

Players can choose only one map when starting a new game. Once you select a map, you cannot change it in the middle of the game. In that case, you will have to restart the game all over again.

The Standard Farm provides the most space to raise animals and plant crops, while the other six maps have special perks, such as:

  • Forest farm favors foraging
  • Riverland farm favors fishing
  • Wilderness farm favors combat
  • Hill-top farm favors mining
  • Four Corners farm encourages multiplayer
  • Beach farm provides additional items and favors for foraging and fishing

The interior of your farmhouse will feature a matching theme of the selected map. This includes flooring, furniture, and wallpaper. The exterior of the farmhouse will remain the same, regardless of the map.

You will find an abandoned building on every map. This building can be later turned into a Greenhouse to grow crops.

Stardew Valley Multiplayer

There’s an optional multiplayer mode that accommodates up to 1-4 players at the same time. It allows players to join the same world through split-screen, IP address, or over LAN.

The multiplayer mode can be accessed on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Not only that, but it is also supported by PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One consoles. Unfortunately, you cannot play it on Android or iOS.

The “host” is the player who created the world, while the other players joining the world are “farmhand.” As a host, you can save the file on your system, and play it in both single-player and multiplayer modes.

Farmhands cannot access the game until the farm is open or the host is online. It should be noted that you cannot transfer farm ownership to other players without modding.

Bundles

Bundles are donations to the Junimos offered via golden scroll inside the community center. Every time a bundle is complete, the players get a reward from the Junimos.

You get a special reward when all the bundles for a particular room in the community center are over. While bundle rewards are offered immediately, special bundle rewards are given at the end of the day via a cutscene showing the Junimos giving the reward. If you manage to complete two bundles in a day, only one cutscene is shown.

If players forget to collect their rewards before completing a room, they can later find a brown bag to the left of the Junimo hut. There are 12 artist bundles and 6 slots to fulfill.

Once you complete all the bundles, the community center will be restored to a brand-new condition. Signing up for the JojaMart Membership turns the community center into a Joja Warehouse.

There are a total of 30 bundles and 6 rooms to complete and in the Joja Warehouse, there are 5 rewards to purchase. You can check the bundle progress at any time, by simply clicking on the Golden Scroll icon located on the top right of the Player Menu.
